Terms of Service
Last updated: May 15, 2026
Introduction & Acceptance
Welcome to CarbonCompared. These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the CarbonCompared website and services at carboncompared.com (the "Service"). By using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the Service.
We've tried to keep these Terms readable. Where legal language is necessary, we've added plain-English explanations so you know what you're agreeing to.
About CarbonCompared
CarbonCompared is a free, independent comparison platform for verified carbon removal and avoidance projects. Our goal is to make the voluntary carbon market more transparent for businesses (especially SMBs) and individuals.
What we are:
- A comparison and education platform.
- A directory of carbon removal and avoidance projects with side-by-side data on quality, permanence, pricing, and independent ratings.
- A service that forwards your quote requests to project suppliers when you ask us to.
What we are not:
- We are not a broker, dealer, exchange, or seller of carbon credits.
- We do not hold, transfer, retire, or take title to carbon credits.
- We do not process payments for carbon credit purchases.
- We do not provide investment, financial, legal, tax, or environmental advice.
Any purchase of carbon credits is a transaction between you and the project supplier, on their terms.
Eligibility
You must be at least 16 years old to use the Service. If you're using the Service on behalf of a company or other organization, you confirm that you have authority to bind that organization to these Terms.
Account Registration & Security
You can browse much of the Service without an account. Some features — like submitting a project, saving quote requests, or managing listings — require registration.
When you create an account:
- Provide accurate information and keep it up to date.
- Keep your password (or other login credentials) confidential.
- You're responsible for activity that happens under your account.
- Notify us at adam@carboncompared.com if you suspect unauthorized access.
We may suspend or close accounts that violate these Terms or that we believe are being used in bad faith.
Acceptable Use
To keep CarbonCompared useful and trustworthy for everyone, you agree not to:
- Use the Service for any unlawful purpose or in violation of any applicable law.
- Submit false, misleading, or fraudulent information — including misrepresenting project details, ratings, or affiliations.
- Impersonate any person or organization.
- Interfere with, disrupt, or attempt to gain unauthorized access to the Service or its underlying systems.
- Scrape, harvest, or extract data from the Service in bulk, or use it to build a competing dataset, without our written permission.
- Upload viruses, malware, or any code intended to harm the Service or its users.
- Use the Service to harass, threaten, or harm others.
- Remove or obscure proprietary notices on the Service.
User Submissions
If you submit content to CarbonCompared — for example, a project listing, supporting documents, or messages within a quote request — these terms apply.
Your responsibilities:
- You confirm you have the right to submit the content and that it doesn't infringe anyone else's rights.
- You confirm the content is accurate to the best of your knowledge, and you'll update it if it becomes inaccurate.
- You won't submit confidential information that you're not authorized to share.
License you grant us:
By submitting content to the Service, you grant CarbonCompared a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, display, reproduce, and distribute that content on the Service and in related marketing, for as long as the content is on the Service. This license is what lets us actually show your project listings to potential buyers.
Our rights:
We may review, edit (for formatting and clarity), refuse, or remove any submission at our discretion — particularly if it appears inaccurate, misleading, unlawful, or contrary to these Terms. We're not obligated to monitor submissions, but we reserve the right to do so.
Third-Party Content & Ratings
CarbonCompared displays content and data from third parties, including:
- Independent rating providers such as BeZero Carbon and Sylvera.
- Verification standards such as Verra (VCS), Gold Standard, Puro.earth, ACR, Climate Action Reserve, and Plan Vivo.
- Project data submitted by project developers.
We display this content for informational and comparison purposes only. We do not endorse any specific project, rating, or standard. Ratings reflect the assessment of the rating provider as of a point in time and may change. Project data is supplied by project developers and may not always be complete or current.
You are responsible for conducting your own due diligence before purchasing carbon credits.
Quote Requests
When you submit a quote request through CarbonCompared, we forward the information you provide to one or more project suppliers so they can respond directly to you.
- We do not handle, escrow, or process any payments.
- We are not a party to any agreement between you and a supplier.
- We don't warrant or guarantee that a supplier will respond, that any quote will be accurate or honored, or that any credits offered will meet your requirements.
- Any contract for the purchase of carbon credits is solely between you and the supplier, on the supplier's terms.
Disclaimers
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory. To the maximum extent permitted by law, CarbonCompared disclaims all warranties, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, completeness, and non-infringement.
In plain English: we work hard to make CarbonCompared useful and accurate, but we can't guarantee that every piece of information is correct, current, or suitable for your specific situation. Don't treat anything on the Service as investment, legal, financial, tax, or environmental advice. Get independent professional advice where appropriate.
Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, CarbonCompared (and its founders, employees, and contributors) will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits, revenues, data, or goodwill, arising out of or in connection with your use of the Service — even if we've been advised of the possibility of such damages.
Our total liability to you for any claim arising out of or relating to the Service is limited to the greater of (a) £100 or (b) the amount you've paid to CarbonCompared in the twelve months before the claim (noting that CarbonCompared is free to use, so this will typically be £0).
Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited (such as for fraud or gross negligence).
Intellectual Property
CarbonCompared, the CarbonCompared name and logo, and the design, code, and original content of the Service are owned by CarbonCompared and are protected by intellectual property laws. You're welcome to use the Service as intended, but you may not copy, modify, distribute, or create derivative works of our proprietary materials without our permission.
You retain ownership of content you submit. You grant us the license described in "User Submissions" above.
Termination
You can stop using the Service at any time. To delete your account, email adam@carboncompared.com.
We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service at any time, with or without notice, if we believe you've violated these Terms or if we need to protect the Service or its users. Sections of these Terms that by their nature should survive termination (including disclaimers, limitations of liability, and intellectual property) will continue to apply.
Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. You agree that the courts of England and Wales will have exclusive jurisdiction over any disputes arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Service, except where applicable law gives you the right to bring proceedings in your country of residence.
Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we'll change the "Last updated" date at the top. For material changes, we'll provide more prominent notice (such as an in-app message or email). Continued use of the Service after an update means you accept the revised Terms.
