Cookie Policy
Last updated: May 15, 2026
Introduction
This Cookie Policy explains how CarbonCompared uses cookies and similar technologies on carboncompared.com (the "Service"). We've kept our cookie use as minimal as possible — only what's needed to run the site and remember your preferences. For broader information about how we handle personal data, see our Privacy Policy.
What Are Cookies
Cookies are small text files that a website places on your device when you visit. They're widely used to make sites work properly, remember preferences, and understand how visitors use a site. "Similar technologies" — like localStorage — work in comparable ways by storing small pieces of information in your browser.
Cookies can be:
- Session cookies — deleted when you close your browser.
- Persistent cookies — stay on your device until they expire or you delete them.
- First-party — set by CarbonCompared.
- Third-party — set by services we use.
Cookies We Use
We keep things deliberately simple.
Essential (always on):
- Authentication cookies — set by Supabase, our authentication provider, to keep you signed in to your account. Without these, the signed-in parts of the Service can't work.
Preferences (stored in your browser's localStorage):
- Cookie consent preferences — we remember the choice you made on our cookie banner so we don't ask you again on every visit.
- UI preferences — for example, your saved view of the project comparison table or in-progress drafts of project submissions.
Analytics:
- We use Simple Analytics, a privacy-friendly analytics provider. Simple Analytics is cookie-less by design — it does not place cookies on your device and does not collect personal data or track you across sites. You can read about their approach to compliance and privacy at docs.simpleanalytics.com/compliance-faq.
We do not use advertising cookies, cross-site tracking cookies, or social media tracking pixels.
Third-Party Cookies
The only third party with the ability to set cookies through the Service is Supabase, and only for essential authentication (keeping you signed in). Simple Analytics, as noted above, does not use cookies at all.
If we ever add other third-party services that use cookies, we'll update this policy and — where required — ask for your consent.
Managing Cookies
You're in control.
- Our cookie banner — when you first visit, you can accept or decline non-essential storage. You can change your choice at any time by clearing your site data in your browser.
- Your browser settings — most browsers let you block or delete cookies. Look in your browser's privacy or security settings. Note that blocking essential cookies will prevent you from signing in to your account.
- Clearing localStorage — you can clear localStorage through your browser's developer tools or by clearing site data in your privacy settings.
Helpful guides from common browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge all provide instructions in their support documentation under "cookies" or "site data".
Do Not Track
Some browsers offer a "Do Not Track" (DNT) signal. There is no industry-standard response to DNT signals, but because we don't engage in cross-site tracking and our analytics provider is cookie-less, your use of the Service is effectively not tracked regardless of your DNT setting.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time. When we do, we'll change the "Last updated" date at the top. If we make material changes — like adding a new category of cookies — we'll provide more prominent notice and, where required, ask for your consent.
