Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 15, 2026
Introduction
Carbon Compared is built on transparency — and that includes how we handle your information. This Privacy Policy explains what we collect, why we collect it, and the choices you have. We've kept the language as plain as we can without losing the precision a privacy policy needs. If anything here is unclear, email us at adam@carboncompared.com and we'll do our best to clarify.
Carbon Compared ("Carbon Compared", "CC", "we", "us", or "our") operates the website at carboncompared.com (the "Service"). By using the Service, you agree to the practices described below.
Information We Collect
We try to collect as little personal information as possible — only what's needed to run the Service and improve it over time.
Information you provide to us:
- Account information — your name, email address, and company name when you create an account or submit a project.
- Project submissions — details you submit about carbon removal or avoidance projects, including project descriptions, methodologies, pricing, and supporting documents.
- Quote requests — the information you include when requesting a quote (volume, vintage preferences, contact details, and any notes you add for suppliers).
- Communications — messages you send us by email or through forms on the site.
Information collected automatically:
- Usage data — aggregated, anonymous analytics about how visitors interact with the Service (pages viewed, referrers, approximate region, device type). We use Simple Analytics, a privacy-friendly analytics provider that does not use cookies or collect personal data. You can read about their approach at docs.simpleanalytics.com/compliance-faq.
- Cookies and similar technologies — for essential functions like keeping you signed in and remembering your cookie preferences. See our Cookie Policy for details.
We do not knowingly collect information from children under 16. If we become aware that we have collected personal data from a child under 16, we will take steps to delete it promptly.
How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide, operate, and maintain the Service.
- Create and manage your account.
- Display projects you've submitted and route quote requests to the relevant project suppliers.
- Send transactional messages (account confirmations, quote request updates, security notices).
- Send occasional marketing emails about CarbonCompared updates and educational content — only to registered users, and only until you opt out.
- Understand how the Service is used so we can improve it.
- Detect, prevent, and respond to fraud, abuse, or security issues.
- Comply with our legal obligations.
Sharing Your Information with Project Developers and Rating Providers
By creating an account and signing in to CarbonCompared, you agree that your information may be shared with project developers listed on the platform and with third-party rating providers such as BeZero Carbon and Sylvera.
This helps project developers understand who is using the platform, and allows rating providers to support the accuracy and relevance of the data we display.
If you do not wish your information to be shared in this way, please do not create an account. If you have already created an account and wish to withdraw this consent, you can request deletion of your account by emailing adam@carboncompared.com.
Legal Basis for Processing
Under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR), we rely on the following legal bases for processing your personal information:
- Contractual necessity — to create and manage your account, display your project submissions, and route your quote requests. These are things we need to do to provide the Service you've signed up for.
- Consent — for marketing emails and for sharing your information with project developers and rating providers (given when you create an account). You can withdraw consent at any time.
- Legitimate interests — to understand how the Service is used (via privacy-friendly analytics), to improve the platform, and to detect and prevent fraud or abuse. We balance these interests against your rights and don't use this basis where it would override your data protection rights.
- Legal obligation — to comply with applicable laws and regulations, including record-keeping requirements.
Information Sharing & Disclosure
We do not sell your personal information, and we don't share it for other companies' marketing.
We share information only in these limited situations:
- With project developers and rating providers — as described above, your information may be shared with project developers listed on the platform and with rating providers such as BeZero Carbon and Sylvera when you create an account and sign in.
- With project suppliers (quote requests) — when you submit a quote request, we forward the information you've provided to the relevant supplier(s) so they can respond. We tell you who we're sending it to.
- With service providers — we use trusted vendors (see "Third-Party Services" below) who process data on our behalf under appropriate confidentiality and security obligations.
- For legal reasons — if required by law, court order, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of CarbonCompared, our users, or the public.
- In a business transfer — if CarbonCompared is involved in a merger, acquisition, or asset sale, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We'll notify you before your information becomes subject to a different privacy policy.
Marketing Communications & Opt-Out
If you've registered an account, we may send you marketing emails about CarbonCompared. You can opt out at any time:
- Click the unsubscribe link at the bottom of any marketing email, or
- Visit our opt-out page, or
- Email us at adam@carboncompared.com.
Opting out of marketing emails won't stop transactional messages tied to your account or quote requests.
Data Retention & Account Deletion
We keep your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service. Specific retention periods:
- Account information — retained for as long as your account is active, and deleted within 30 days of an account deletion request (except where retention is required by law).
- Quote requests — retained for up to 6 years after the last activity on the request, to support the suppliers and buyers involved and to comply with UK record-keeping requirements.
- Project submissions — retained for as long as the project listing is active on the Service, and for up to 6 years after removal for record-keeping purposes.
- Analytics data — aggregated and anonymous; not tied to your account and not subject to deletion requests.
You can request deletion of your account and associated personal information at any time by emailing adam@carboncompared.com. We'll confirm when it's done. When your account is deleted, your information will no longer be shared with project developers or rating providers.
Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information — including encrypted connections, access controls, and a reputable backend provider (Supabase). No system is perfectly secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security, but we take this seriously and continue to improve our practices.
If we become aware of a data breach that poses a risk to your rights and freedoms, we will notify the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) within 72 hours where required by law, and will inform affected users without undue delay.
If you believe your account has been compromised, please email adam@carboncompared.com right away.
International Data Transfers
Some of our service providers (including Supabase) may process data outside the United Kingdom. Where personal data is transferred outside the UK, we ensure that appropriate safeguards are in place — such as Standard Contractual Clauses or transfers to countries that have received a UK adequacy decision — to protect your information in accordance with UK data protection law.
Third-Party Services
We rely on a small number of third parties to operate the Service. Each handles data under their own terms and privacy policies.
- Supabase — our backend, authentication, and database provider. Stores account information, project submissions, and quote requests.
- Simple Analytics — privacy-friendly analytics. No cookies, no cross-site tracking, no personal data. See docs.simpleanalytics.com/compliance-faq.
- Resend — used to send transactional and marketing emails.
- Ratings and project data — we display third-party content from providers such as BeZero Carbon and Sylvera, and project data submitted by project developers. This information is shown for comparison purposes. By creating an account, you consent to your information being shared with these providers (see "Sharing Your Information with Project Developers and Rating Providers" above).
Third-Party Data Provider Terms
Carbon Compared may make available to you on its platform data sourced from and on behalf of a third party ("a Data Provider"). If you access such third-party data, you agree with Carbon Compared on behalf of itself and the relevant Data Provider:
- not to distribute, publish or re-use such data, whether for commercial purposes or not, without the express written consent from the Data Provider; and
- to acknowledge that the data provided does not constitute any form of investment advice or recommendation for the purchase or investment in any carbon emission project which the data relates to.
Your Rights
Under UK data protection law, you have the following rights over the personal information we hold about you:
- Access — request a copy of the information we hold about you.
- Rectification — ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete information.
- Deletion — ask us to delete your information (see "Data Retention & Account Deletion").
- Portability — request your information in a portable format.
- Objection and restriction — object to or limit certain uses of your information.
- Withdraw consent — where we rely on consent (including consent to share your information with project developers and rating providers), you can withdraw it at any time.
To exercise any of these rights, email adam@carboncompared.com. We'll respond within one month. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we'll change the "Last updated" date and version number at the top. For changes that affect your rights or how we process your data, we'll email registered users directly. Continued use of the Service after an update means you accept the revised policy.
