How they work

Afforestation, Reforestation & Restoration
Afforestation, reforestation and restoration (ARR) projects plant trees on land that was previously unforested, restore degraded forests, or rebuild whole ecosystems. Growing biomass sequesters CO₂ while supporting biodiversity, watersheds, and local livelihoods.
ARR credits are among the most recognisable in the voluntary carbon market. Quality varies with land tenure, species mix, and monitoring, so independent ratings and registry accreditation are especially valuable when comparing projects.
Improved Forest Management
Improved Forest Management (IFM) projects change how existing forests are managed so they store more carbon than business as usual. Typical practices include extending harvest rotations, reducing logging intensity, and protecting high-carbon stands.
IFM credits reward keeping carbon in living ecosystems. Careful baseline-setting and third-party verification are key quality signals, since the climate benefit depends on what would have happened without the project.
Permanence
Permanence is how long the carbon stays out of the atmosphere, and it is often the clearest difference between two project types. Carbon locked into rock or deep geology is measured in thousands of years, while carbon held in living biomass depends on the land staying intact and protected. Avoided emissions are a different case: nothing is being stored, so the question shifts to how confident you can be that those emissions really would have happened otherwise.
