CORSIA
The Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation, run by ICAO, under which airlines cancel eligible carbon credits against growth in international flight emissions. Only units from ICAO approved programmes qualify.
Why CORSIA matters for carbon credit buyers
CORSIA is the largest source of compliance demand for project-based credits, and it draws on the same registries that serve voluntary buyers. Its eligibility rules are strict: units must come from an approved programme, fall inside set vintage windows, and carry host country authorisation with a corresponding adjustment. The first phase runs from 2024 to 2026 with voluntary state participation, and the second phase from 2027 becomes mandatory for most states, which is widely expected to concentrate demand on a narrow pool of eligible units. Buyers outside aviation should be aware that CORSIA eligibility competes for the same supply and can influence what they pay.
