Crediting Period
The fixed span of time during which a project may generate credits under its approved methodology. Lengths vary by verification standard and project type, and periods are often renewable with the baseline reassessed at renewal.
Why the crediting period matters for carbon credit buyers
The crediting period governs how long a project can keep issuing, which affects both the supply available to buyers and the credibility of the underlying baseline. Technology projects typically run on shorter renewable periods, while forestry and other land-based projects use much longer ones because carbon accumulates slowly. A long crediting period without baseline revision is a quality concern, since the original assumptions drift further from reality as the years pass. Buyers negotiating multi-year supply should check where a project sits in its crediting period and when the next renewal falls.
